TP 11/3/14
Today I met Mathew. He’s a great
kid but not eager to do his homework. I found that he was testing me today by
his rebellion against reading comprehension homework. We decided to read Diary
of a Wimpy kid, but I quickly discovered that his taste for reading out loud is
lacking, as he was sitting upside down changing the subject over and over again
when after he was told to summarize a passage. Eventually I found that he doesn’t
do well reading all at once. So I proposed that if I read a paragraph then he should
read the next paragraph. Afterwards, he was more attentive and less
argumentative. I later found out from his mom that that is usually how they
proceed with his homework. The funniest part about the evening though was that
it turns out my friend Jonnie Kate, whom I had been talking to over Facebook
before the tutoring session were both tutoring children at the public library.
She in fact is tutoring Mathew’s twin brother David. I was so upset when David
came running towards us afterwards with some “super blue mega-awesome” candy
treat. I saw Jonnie Kate and responded “that’s what I have to compete with?!
Candy as motivation!” She replied, “Oh I am not opposed to bribery”. We both
laughed, but secretly I was thinking what I will bring next week to top her
treat…
