On Friday my conversation partner Ahmed and
I met at the FSU circus. This was a very special circus performance because
this one was Halloween themed. I had gone to this circus before a couple of
years ago but this particular showing seemed to be even better than I had
remembered it. It was very difficult to speak with Ahmed at first and I only
thank God for technology because we used his translator many times. Normally I
would want to encourage different motives of communicating but since observing
his class I could tell that there was not many things we could say with only
simple present. We both really enjoyed the experience and learned a great deal
about each other. He is here to study audiology and is twenty-three years old.
What I enjoyed most about this experience was that every time Ahmed became
frustrated with his lack of speaking ability he would only laugh and pull out
his phone after a few minutes of struggle over a phrase. I admire that about
him because I know if I were in his shoes I would not react so pleasantly. I
would probably not laugh but get frustrated and angry at myself. Overall I
believe that our experiences will be intriguing and fun ones in the future.
