This past Wednesday I met my third
conversation partner, Abdul. He speaks the best English out of my three
conversation partners. He also seems more Americanized and “broey” than the
others. He smoke cigarettes, goes to clubs, has girlfriends, and has adopted a
YOLO attitude. He’s been in the US for a year, and according to him has been at
the same level in CIES for five sessions. He said this is due to his lack of
discipline and infrequent class attendance. In fact, classes didn’t seem to
matter too much to him. I picked him up from his friends place and took him to
an open mic night that I’d been wanting to check out. The place looked really
sketchy, but the inside wasn’t very too bad. We sat and watched a band place
some mediocre songs then a nervous girl gingerly sing some acoustic songs.
Abdul didn’t seem to be too into it. I got a call from a friend inviting me to
a bar, so I took the opportunity to do something that seemed more up Abdul’s
alley. We left the open mic bar and went to Fermentation Lounge. When they
check our I.D.’s at the bar they saw Abdul wasn’t 21 and asked him to leave. We
disregarded her request and sat outside to wait for my friend to arrive. In the
meantime we made small talk with a man who happened to be a good friend of
Ramin. When my friend arrived we joined him and met a group of his friends who
were already at the bar. After making our introduction a large bearded man
showed up and loudly demanded that Abdul leave. To his credit, Abdul handled
the situation coolly. After the situation had been defused we left and went to Café
Shisha where we happened to run into my other two conversation partners and
their friends. We all hung out together for a while until Abdul left with some
other friends. I spent the rest of the night with Mohammad and Badah.
