Yesterday I observed Ramin’s
group 4a speaking class. As soon as he came in he presented the class itinerary
on the board.
5 min – Ramin took roll and
talked to students about an assignment they were supposed to have done before
coming to class that involved them interviewing students about Halloween. The CIES
students were supposed to have recorded their interview. Ramin asked the class
what they thought the rationale of listening to their own recordings was and
also gives them the rationale for the assignment that they were supposed to
have done.
25 min – Students received a
handout that contained some of the grammar mistakes that they had made during
the interviews. They formed pairs or groups and began to work on correcting
their grammar mistakes. Ramin, Harrison, and I helped the students with their grammar
and pronunciation errors.
10 mins – Ramin went over the presentation
requirements for a presentation they would have to conduct the following day. He
gave examples of power point slide topics and answered students’ questions.
10 mins – For the last ten
minutes of class Ramin went over how to give a good presentation and what the
steps were to make it memorable and engaging. He talked about attention getting
techniques and involved the class by asking them the rationale for the various
techniques he was talking about, such as “why use facts in your presentation?”
and “why is it good to be redundant”? etc.
It was a real pleasure observing
Ramin’s class. The students speaking level was high enough for me to carry on
seamless conversation with them while we were going over their interview corrections,
and the class flowed smoothly from start to finish.
