CO 1 Beginner 10/22/14

For my beginners’ class I decided to observe Leslie’s class. It was interesting how Leslie used Bobby and me as inspiration for a spontaneous review. She asked the students to ask us our names and ages as a transition into the lesson. After announcing the quiz on personal information for the next day Leslie told the student’s the objectives for the day. The one she really emphasized on was the game they were going to play towards the end of class. During all of these announcements Leslie made sure she used many hand motions and body language as a tool to convey the assignments and content required for the lesson. The first activity of the day served as a review for the following day by assigning everyone into partners. While the students read the questions from the board Leslie circulated the class taking notes on mistakes made.

My mothers name is…
My mother’s name is…

Though she does not correct every single mistake she focuses on the ones that will be on the quiz the following day. Finally they start the game. The game was a board game that required the students to make sentences about daily routines. I believe the board game was a success.

Leslie did get upset on the amount of Arabic spoken in class that day. As a result she implemented the rule, -1 point on participation for every time someone does not speak English, -2 points for absence, and -1 point for the use of cellular devices. Another note to acknowledge is that Leslie never leaves a sentence on the board incorrect, which I thought was a helpful concept.
