On Friday October 31st
Ahmed and I decided to celebrate Halloween by going to Rocky Horror. I was
really nervous about him going as it is a very scandalous show that not all
American’s, let alone those from different countries, feel comfortable with. Seeing Rocky Horror as a conversation partner day was
not my idea. I had casually mentioned that going to the SLC on Halloween was my
plan and Ahmed politely asked if he could come too. I said yes and dreaded that
this would be the last time Ahmed would want to willingly hang out with me
again.
Fortunately though it was a success.
He realized that all the scandalous costumes, though not appropriate in his
mind, were just dress up. I had bought American candy as our substitute for trick or treating beforehand. I thought I would surprise him with Pop Rocks but apparently he had had these before. I was kind of disappointed by his lack of surprise but he took it with excitement none the less. Once we got in and sat down we had a great time of
throwing confetti at nearby audience members and hiding beneath newspapers in a
clearly dry theater. Ahmed was so excited about hanging out again he
immediately started making plans on what he was going to cook for my friend
Jackie and me once we come to his house for dinner the following week. I am really excited to experience his culture
now that I have shared a silly tradition of ours.
